Konkurs na stypendium naukowe dla doktoranta

We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical University of Lublin. The full-time position as a PhD- student is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ” Intracellular cross-talk between ligands and Notch receptors determine signalling responses”, financed by the NCN (Polish National Science Centre).

The Notch signalling pathway is a crucial regulator of cell differentiation and tissue organisation. One of the open question in Notch signalling is how cells can discriminate which ligand activates a Notch receptor – often giving opposite responses e.g. JAG1-activation of Notch1 induces angiogenesis, while DLL4-activation of Notch1 results in the suppression of angiogenesis.

The aim of the project is to understand the bivalent nature of Notch signalling upon specific ligand activation. As well as to determine the responses in both cis- and trans-activating conformations.

Carrying out the practical laboratory work described in the project

Designing and generate the mutagenesis libraries, molecular cloning, fluorescence imaging, flow cytometry, protein-protein interactions and protein-DNA analysis. Functional cell assays and biosensors.

Attending courses to gain knowledge on how to analyse the scientific data as well as how to handle the different techniques needed for the project. Working in vitro and in vivo systems.

Publishing research data from the project. Presenting the data in the internal biweekly meetings, as well as in the Department’s monthly meetings

The student will participate with posters or oral presentations in conferences, national and international.

Good working and social skills. The PhD student will work in close collaboration with a Postdoctoral fellow and the PI, as well as the rest of the PI’s team (PhD students and postdoc), and in some cases, with other members of the department of Biochem and Mol Biol, and collaborators.

MSc-degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering or Biomedicine (or related fields).

Good practical and theoretical knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.

Experience in microscopy and spectroscopic techniques.

Basic skills in bacterial and cell culture methods, molecular cloning, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging and statistics.

Knowledge and experience in gene editing technologies and optogenetics.

An interest in molecular mechanisms of development, tissue organisation and disease.

Great work capacity and enthusiasm for research.

An active participation in student scientific groups, societies and conferences.

Fluency in spoken and written English. The working language is English.

Publications in refereed journals, any internships abroad, or teaching abilities will be considered as additional advantages.

Applicants should have prior experience (hands-on) in flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Prior experience in gene editing and optogenetic techniques will be considered as valuable assets.

  • a brief motivation letter outlining why you are interested in the position, your previous research projects and work experience (CV) and your career goals
  • A description of your MSc thesis
  • the copies of diplomas, the complete list of your degrees and relevant certificates
  • complete list of conference abstracts and/or publications
  • two referees (name and contact information)
  • The best candidates will be invited for about 30 minutes job interview.
